The 24" inch iMac. Whoa.

Apologies to all for the recent absence of updates… my review eyes were waaay bigger than my stomach. The transition to California continues swimmingly and will be completed by next week. However, all shall be rewarded very soon as I have a new baby coming! Yes that’s right… the 24″ piece of stunning technology pictured to the right will at last be MINE! Yay! I’m so excited, I can hardly contain my emotion!!!

What does this mean: More reviews to come, and major catch-up is required. Also, the podcast supplement entitled The Orgconfuz Playlist will now become much more frequent and hopefully clearer now that I have a microphone headset. Thanks for your patience!!

The Animation Show Year 3 (DVD) and Year 4 in NYC!

The Animation Show
IFC Center, NYC  – August 10, 2008

Year Four of the Animation Show! This will be a short review and serve more as a collection of found video links for the various contributed films, as I doubt many will have seen it (or will be able to see it based on limited runs). I am a firm believer that with certain works of art, it is best to allow everyone to form their own opinion. The Animation Show is no exception. The program’s website has information on each animated short featured in the 2008, and all previous years as well. There is also a Wiki dedicated to the Animation Show.

(S)laughter is the Best Medicine (The Dark Knight)

The Joker: If you’re good at something, never do it for free.

The Dark Knight
AMC Stony Brook – July 18
Island 16 – July 28, 2008

Summer blockbusters have officially been taken over… by superheroes! First, I am certain that in recent years the Spiderman series had a hand in fermenting the early summer as the season for comic book heroes to shine. (However, tribute must be paid to the fore fathers of the action-scifi genre, aka Independence Day and the Terminator). As a follow-up act to several other supernatural film releases, one could get the impression that not only has Hollywood embraced the fanboys of graphic novels, the genre has been taken to the next level. To Hellboy with Hancock, this is the best superhero movie made in years!

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD! Proceed with Caution!

Sex and the City: The Movie

Mr. Big: You make me very happy.
Carrie Bradshaw: Yeah, yeah… put it in writing.

Sex and the City: The Movie
AMC Stony Brook – June 14 & June 27, 2008

As one can tell by the extreme lateness of this review, I had a little trouble harnessing my full reaction. Not for any negative reasons mind you, but because personally I am processing relationships – romantic and otherwise- a little differently these days. But when my gay best friend and my best girl friend starting crying out and shunning me over it (not seriously, of course), I figured it was finally time to finish it.

Let me begin by saying I truly love and respect the SATC series. So much so that I own that certain pink fuzzy boxset, now worn from use. These four women have had an profound effect on my life, and therefore I vibrantly joined the female masses in glee as the continuation of this story became a feature length film. As Oprah says, “Sex is back in the city and they bring it to the screen as only this fabulous foursome can.”

For those that have not seen the film (better yet, have not completed the series), I would turn away now. There really is no way to review the film without picking up where the series ended. The plot progresses, as all human lives do, into the next chapter of the four main characters’ lives. To truly appreciate the emotional spectrum (ok, now I’m really a girl), I implore you to finish the series!

An Unmarried Woman: Prelude to Sex and The City

An Unmarried Woman
DVD – July 2, 2008

By recommendation of Sarah Jessica Parker in an interview in New York magazine, I rented a DVD of the 1978 film, An Unmarried Woman. She calls it an earlier version of Sex and the City, set in a far rawer seventies Manhattan. For the time, An Unmarried Woman was quite controversial, but very well received.

I Survived a Japanese Game Show -> Lost in Translation

I Survived A Japanese Game Show
ABC premiere – June 24, 2008

Last night, I was scrolling channels for something to watch during dinner. Normally as a general concept, I avoid reality TV with the occasional exception of American Idol auditions or So You Think You Can Dance. At around 9 pm on ABC, I came across a new reality show called I Survived a Japanese Game Show. (IMDB) 10 Americans are flown to Japan (most of whom have never left the U.S.) to compete on a popular Japanese game show called MAJIDE. The winner of the competition receives $250,000. Interesting concept!

The Savages

Wendy Savage: I’m Lenny Savage’s daughter in B26. He has a big red pillow; it’s missing.
Simone: Did he have his name on it?
Wendy Savage: And his room number.
Simone: What’s it look like?
Wendy Savage: Big. Red. Pillow.

The Savages
DVD – June 7, 2008

On a whim, I decided to ask my mother if she would like to see The Savages today. We collectively have enjoyed Phillip Seymour Hoffman in many roles, as well as Laura Linney and Philip Bosco, who all star as Brother, Sister and Father Savage. The film’s trailer portrays a sardonic, but playful repertoire between the siblings and their father that I thought it might be a nice family pic to see with my mom.

Great World of Sound

Pam: Paint another f-ing duck.

Great World Of Sound
DVD – June 1, 2008

Limited release films are a real treat for me, as they usually only run in NYC. Adding the travel costs to a city-priced ticket quickly becomes a luxury that’s reserved for greater venues such as concerts or broadway shows. It is a real shame that distribution deals curtail the participation of willing film patrons. I saw the trailer for the film Great World of Sound, and thought “Hey, that looks funny. If that gets released like Little Miss Sunshine, I’ll get to see it.”

The Age of the Movie Musical… (Across the Universe DVD)

Max: Why is it always what will I do? What will he do? Oh my god, what will he do! Do, do, do, do, do. Why isn’t the issue here who I am?
Uncle Teddy: Because, Maxwell, what you do defines who you are.
Max: No, Uncle Teddy. Who you are defines what you do. Right, Jude?
Jude: [awkward] … Well, surely it’s not what you do, but the, uh… the way that you do it.

Across the Universe
DVD Wednesday – April 30, 2008

A friend recently lent me a copy of Across the Universe on DVD, and by thus becoming the first request for an Organized Confusion review!

No Country For Old Men *DVD Update*

Deputy: This sure is a mess. Ain’t it, Sheriff?
Sheriff: If it ain’t, it’ll do ’til the mess gets here.

DVD Wednesday – 2nd Viewing – April 12, 2008

Though a firm believer in the purity of first viewing reactions, I bring you an even more glowing 2nd viewing wrap-up of No Country for Old Men. Again, this is a phenomenal film. Second time around only improved the pacing and the flow of the story. The noir-inspired suspense, the thrill of the chase, the carefully placed violence… all spectacular.
